- AnyWord
- -------
-
- Welcome to the world of indexed text retrieval.
- Complete instructions on using AnyWord can be found
- in the F-HELP file. You can print this out or just
- refer to it online from time to time. (It's
- available under the HELP menu selection when
- running the Finder program.) In any case, we
- suggest you at least skim through the entire
- manual and particularly sections:
- General Introduction
- How to Use the Manual
- Installation
- Getting Started with Finder
- Getting Started with Indexer
- System Flow
-
- Figure on spending 1-2 hours with AnyWord before
- being able to do anything useful with it. But once
- you've mastered the basics of indexing and
- searching, you'll find AnyWord gives you a new
- level of control over your text files.
-
- The remaining information in this file consists
- of:
- - user registration information
- - the licensing agreement
- - information about recent updates to
- the AnyWord package.

-
- Registration
- ------------
- The software on this diskette has been provided
- on an honor system "try-before-you-buy" basis.
- (If you paid less than $9 for this diskette,
- your payment was simply for a duplication/handling
- charge and for the diskette itself, not for its
- contents.)
-
- As much as we'd like to provide this software
- for free, its development took approximately 800
- hours. (That's 800 hours I could have spent making
- some money to meet my mortgage payments.) If you
- like AnyWord and would like to continue using it,
- then please pay for it. Of course, this is all on
- the honor system and we won't be checking up on
- anyone. However, if you do send us a check for
- $35, you will be supporting our past and future
- efforts in developing affordable information
- retrieval software.
-
- By sending in your $35, you will automatically
- become a member of our AnyWord users group.
- Members of the users group get:
- - a free DOSCARD
- - technical support for problems
- - assistance and advice with particular applications
- - programming support at a discount
- - free bug fixes
- - inexpensive update disks with new features
- - other benefits from time to time.
-
- We also give bonuses to members when
- they bring in other members.
-
- To join, just send us a check or money
- order, with your name and address, and the AnyWord
- serial number (which you can get by doing
- SHOWID at the DOS prompt -- this is how we credit
- whomever you got your disk from). If you think you
- will be distributing copies to others, give us your
- social security number (or other identifier) as well,
- so we can give you credit. (And run MAKEID to record
- your number on the disk.)
-
- Software developers: the complete C source code is
- available for licensing. You can use all or part
- of the code for your own applications, or just look
- at it to get your own ideas. Contact me for
- further information.

- Update Log
- ----------
-
- 9/1/88
- - Changes to CONVCRLF (optional text reformatting program):
- a) No longer removes blank lines from a file
- b) Drops leading spaces after an inserted hard carriage return
- c) Accepts a parameter to set the linesize, e.g.
- convcrlf infile outfile -l72
- where 72 would be the largest line length
- - Inclusion of a sample exclusion file
-
- 5/5/88 Version 1.06:
- - re-addition of 2 sample profiles that had been left off Version 1.05
- - minor documentation improvements
- - minor internal improvements in Indexer and Finder
-
-
- 2/13/88
-
- 1 - You will find a program called MAKEID on your diskette. Run
- this program to put your social security number on the diskette so
- that you will get credit when you give a copy of AnyWord to someone
- else and they decide to join our users group. (You must be a
- member yourself in order to to be credited.)
-
- 2 - You will also find a "bat" file called SHOWID. This contains
- the identifying social security number of whomever you got your
- disk from. Give us this number when you join the AnyWord users group.
-
-
- 1/28/88
-
- 1 - You should find a program called SFIND on your diskette. The
- contents of SFIND.DOC will tell you how to use this quick string search
- program.
-
-
- 2 - If you want to use files created by Microsoft Word or XyWrite or
- other word processing programs, you will need to create "ASCII" files
- first. These are files that do not contain any special control codes for
- formatting -- no underlining codes, for instance. This is generally an
- option of your WP program.
-
- Once you've created ASCII versions of your files, they may still not
- work properly with AnyWord because AnyWord expects "hard" carriage
- return/line feeds at the end of every line. The symptoms of this are:
- - when you display text, the word at the end of the line may be split;
- - when you page up/down in the displayed text, the display may appear to
- be stuck in a particular spot;
- - searched-for text may not be displayed on the correct page, but instead
- on the previous page.
-
- To cure this problem, run the ASCII files one at a time through the
- "CONVCRLF" program. For instance, if you've created files "ABC.COR"
- and "DEF.DAT", you can do:
- convcrlf abc.cor abc.co#
- convcrlf def.dat def.da#
- then update your profile file with the new names and run Indexer.
- (Optionally, you can choose to delete the old files and rename the new
- files to the old names.)
