  4.    Welcome to the world of indexed text retrieval.
  5. Complete instructions on using AnyWord can be found
  6. in the F-HELP file.  You can print this out or just
  7. refer to it online from time to time.  (It's
  8. available under the HELP menu selection when
  9. running the Finder program.)  In any case, we
  10. suggest you at least skim through the entire
  11. manual and particularly sections:
  12.        General Introduction
  13.        How to Use the Manual
  14.        Installation
  15.        Getting Started with Finder
  16.        Getting Started with Indexer
  17.        System Flow
  18.  
  19.    Figure on spending 1-2 hours with AnyWord before
  20. being able to do anything useful with it.  But once
  21. you've mastered the basics of indexing and
  22. searching, you'll find AnyWord gives you a new
  23. level of control over your text files.

  25.    The remaining information in this file consists
  26. of:
  27.  - user registration information
  28.  - the licensing agreement
  29.  - information about recent updates to
  30.    the AnyWord package.

  33. Registration
  34. ------------
  35.    The software on this diskette has been provided
  36. on an honor system "try-before-you-buy" basis.
  37. (If you paid less than $9 for this diskette,
  38. your payment was simply for a duplication/handling
  39. charge and for the diskette itself, not for its
  40. contents.)

  42.    As much as we'd like to provide this software
  43. for free, its development took approximately 800
  44. hours.    (That's 800 hours I could have spent making
  45. some money to meet my mortgage payments.)  If you
  46. like AnyWord and would like to continue using it,
  47. then please pay for it.  Of course, this is all on
  48. the honor system and we won't be checking up on
  49. anyone.  However, if you do send us a check for
  50. $35, you will be supporting our past and future
  51. efforts in developing affordable information
  52. retrieval software.

  54.    By sending in your $35, you will automatically
  55. become a member of our AnyWord users group.

  69. order, with your name and address, and the AnyWord
  70. serial number (which you can get by doing
  71. SHOWID at the DOS prompt -- this is how we credit
  72. whomever you got your disk from).  If you think you
  73. will be distributing copies to others, give us your
  74. social security number (or other identifier) as well,
  75. so we can give you credit.  (And run MAKEID to record
  76. your number on the disk.)

  79. available for licensing.  You can use all or part
  80. of the code for your own applications, or just look
  81. at it to get your own ideas.  Contact me for

  171. 1 - You will find a program called MAKEID on your diskette.  Run
  172. this program to put your social security number on the diskette so
  173. that you will get credit when you give a copy of AnyWord to someone
  174. else and they decide to join our users group.  (You must be a
  175. member yourself in order to to be credited.)

  177. 2 - You will also find a "bat" file called SHOWID.  This contains
  178. the identifying social security number of whomever you got your
  179. disk from.  Give us this number when you join the AnyWord users group.

  184. 1 - You should find a program called SFIND on your diskette.  The
  185. contents of SFIND.DOC will tell you how to use this quick string search
  186. program.

  189. 2 - If you want to use files created by Microsoft Word or XyWrite or
  190. other word processing programs, you will need to create "ASCII" files
  191. first. These are files that do not contain any special control codes for
  192. formatting -- no underlining codes, for instance.  This is generally an
  193. option of your WP program.
  194.  
  195.     Once you've created ASCII versions of your files, they may still not
  196. work properly with AnyWord because AnyWord expects "hard" carriage
  197. return/line feeds at the end of every line.  The symptoms of this are:
  198.   - when you display text, the word at the end of the line may be split;
  199.   - when you page up/down in the displayed text, the display may appear to
  200.     be stuck in a particular spot;
  201.   - searched-for text may not be displayed on the correct page, but instead
  202.     on the previous page.

  204.     To cure this problem, run the ASCII files one at a time through the
  205. "CONVCRLF" program.  For instance, if you've created files "ABC.COR"
  206. and "DEF.DAT", you can do:
  207.        convcrlf  abc.cor  abc.co#
  208.        convcrlf  def.dat  def.da#
  209. then update your profile file with the new names and run Indexer.
  210. (Optionally, you can choose to delete the old files and rename the new
  211. files to the old names.)
